Packers Win!

We had a great Superbowl Sunday at our house. Not only was it awesome that the Packers won but we were able to host a big party for the first time in our new place. Long before we knew who was going to be in the Superbowl we decided that we wanted to have a Superbowl party for our church home group and really anyone else we happened to talk to about the fact that we were having a party.

Since the Packers ended up making it to the Superbowl we decided to decorate in green and gold and have a Packers party. Granted no one else was really a Packers fan and several people (Bears fans) probably were rooting against the Packers. They just were really nice to Matt and held it in during the game.

The party was great. We ended up with tons of awesome food. Italian beef, nacho dip, BBQ meatballs, chili-mac, spinach dip, fruit, deviled eggs, cornbread, banana bread, chips, homemade cookies, and much more filled our bellies. I counted that we had 22 adults and 7 kids in the house. This would be impossible at the old house. Even half of that would have been impossible at the old house so we just felt very blessed to have the ability to host this party. Here's to the next party. And here's to the Packers winning the Superbowl again next year.

2010 NFC North Preview

I (Matt) am back after a long hiatus caused by laziness and a twisted left ankle. OK, there actually wasn't a twisted left ankle. Only laziness.

The 2010 NFL Season is right around the corner, so an NFC North preview is in order. Thanks to my loyal reader(s) out there who likes reading about my sports opinions!

A Look Back

Last year, the NFC North contained riveting drama with the unretirement of Brett Favre to the Minnesota Vikings. He had his revenge against the Packers by beating them twice and leading the Vikings to the NFC Championship game. The Packers had a great second half of the season and went to the playoffs as a wild-card entry before losing in the first round in dramatic fashion. The Bears and Lions did not win many games last year.

The Prognosis

I see the 2010 season shaping up to be similar to 2009 for the NFC North. The Packers and Vikings will be in the top tier and fight for the division crown, while the Bears and Lions will struggle to stay about .500. One notable tidbit about 2010 for the NFC North division is they are scheduled to play for the AFC East and NFC East divisions, which are two of the three most difficult divisions in the league (I'd also put the AFC North up there).

My prediction is that the Packers will win the division with a 10-6 record by relying on their high-powered offense and an easier schedule than the Vikings. Their defense will still give them trouble and will prevent them from getting to the NFC Championship game. The Vikings will finish second at 9-7 and miss out on the playoffs. The Vikings have question marks at the receiver position and secondary that will lead to their demise. Brett Favre should have another solid year, but it is expected that he will retire and unretire a couple times during the season.

The Bears may show some promise with a new offense and I expect Jay Cutler to have a good year, but I see them finishing at 7-9, leading to the probable firing of Lovie Smith. The Lions will be improved, but I don't see them doing better than 6-10. They're still a year or two away from being competitive in the division. And they're from Detroit.

C25K: Week 1

I'm happy to report that Matt and I have completed week 1 of The Couch-to-5K Running Plan. The goal is to go from not running at all to being able to run a 5K in 9 weeks. Seeing that I actually have been working out regularly since 6 weeks after Grace was born and have run 5K's a few times without any sort of training I decided I could handle this challenge. My workouts this last year have consited of spinning and strength training classes at the gym. After taking a couple weeks off because I was babysitting I decided I needed to change things up a little. I also felt as if I was lacking a good cardio workout. So the running began. I don't have a 5K that I want to run, I don't even know if I will complete week 2 but this week felt good. Feel free to visit the link above to see what this weeks running plan was. I'll try to keep you updated on my running progress over the next 2-8 weeks depending on how long I last.

The Bruised Ego Of Brett Favre

Brett Favre has been an interesting sports figure in my life over the last couple years as he has gone from hero to enemy as he retired from the Green Bay Packers and then played for the Minnesota Vikings this year. With that said, I do respect him as a football player but I must bring to light a recent event that I find disturbing.

An interesting story came out today regarding Brett Favre's injuries during the Vikings-Saints game last week, a game in which Favre threw a very costly interception at the end of regulation before the Vikings went on to lose in overtime to the Saints. Much was said of how the Saints got a lot of hits on Favre and today photos were released of Favre's injured ankle and hamstring.

The disturbing thing to me about the pictures is not the severe bruises and swelling (I can somewhat comprehend how intensely physical the game of football can be). What is disturbing to me is the fact that the photos were taken and released to the public. I have been an avid football fan for many years and I have never heard of a football star taking or releasing pictures of their injuries before. Football players get through bodies injured and damaged week in and week out, but they don't have slide shows of their injuries produced to garner sympathy.

To try to explain Favre, I'm going to propose three rational possible explanations of why these pictures of his injuries were put out:

1) Favre did not know that pictures were being released. Maybe a family member was having fun and snapped the pics and then leaked them. Fair enough, but I don't see this as likely.

2) Favre allowed the pictures to be released because the injuries he had were the worst of his career. Maybe the bruises were so bad that Favre felt compelled to have photos taken and given to the press? Or maybe NFL players have bruises this bad on a regular basis. Favre has played through many injuries and I can't believe this was the worst beating he has taken. Which means that only the 3rd option seems logical to me....

3) Favre allowed the pictures to be released in an attempt to defend himself after his horrible interception at the end of the game. Think about this. Favre has never before released pictures of his injuries. But now after a big game where he choked, it looks like he wants to throw attention off of his poor decision and onto his injury, to cast himself as the warrior victim who survived a battle.

I'm not trying to hit a guy when he's down. I just want Favre to be a man and admit his mistake and stand by it. He's still a great player, he still had a great season, and played well in the playoffs this year. Instead of moving on, he had to make an excuse to defend himself.

To conclude: I respect that Favre was roughed up during the game and played through pain, but I don't respect the fact that he allowed the pictures to surface. Bruised ankle and hamstring? Yes, definitely. But it looks like there's also a bruised ego in the picture.

College Basketball

No, this is not Matt posting. :) I just wanted to put a couple picture up of Grace's first 2 college basketball games. We have been able to attend games for both Matt and my Alma mater. Even though the basketball program for Matt's school is much bigger I think I enjoyed my school's better. It brought back memories of going to games while I was in college. It was also fun because Grace got to go to that game with my parents who also went to school there and have season tickets. So I think it was fun for them too!

MLB Playoff Predictions

The calendar has turned to October so that means it's playoffs time for Major League Baseball. I will be forecasting the division series match-ups and offering predictions that are worth gambling on(*).

First, though, I'd like to thank the Minnesota Twins and Detroit Tigers for starting off the postseason with a grand game last night. It was a back-and-forth classic that the home team Twins eventually won in the 12th inning. Go baseball.

Now on the predictions....

Rockies vs Phillies: The Phillies won the World Series last year, but two years ago the Rockies swept the Phillies in the playoffs. Rockies are the hotter team, so I'll go with them. Rockies shall prevail in 5.

Cardinals vs Dodgers: The Cardinals like to wear red, and the Dodgers like to wear blue. My favorite color is blue, but the Cardinals have better pitching. Cardinals win in 4 games.

Twins vs Yankees: The Twins are really tired after their long game last night. The Yankees are rested and spent a billion dollars on their team. And the Yankees probably are taking steroids. Yankees in 4.

Red Sox vs Angels: These two teams have played the last two years with the Red Sox prevailing both years. I think the Angels will turn the tide this year. I have no justification for that. Just my gut feeling. Angels in 5.

My Quarterback

First of all, this is Matt blogging. I realize that due to my lack of blogging, the readership of Pennyrile has become mostly females. However, I still have hope that there is at least one or two guys out there who are still faithfully reading in hopes that they can hear from me.

I want to give you a glimpse into an amazing phenomenon that has arisen in our society over the past decades or so: fantasy football. It has become something that is not only for sports fans, but for anyone who knows a sports fan or likes numbers or knows what a football is. I recently had two fantasy football drafts (last Friday and Saturday). And over half the participants in the leagues were people who I wouldn't consider football fans. They don't regularly watch the NFL or have a favorite team, but they are enticed to participate in fantasy football.

So in this blog, I want to tell you about an unknown football player who will be my starting quarterback for both my fantasy football teams. I normally don't draft quarterbacks very high and this year was no exception. I stocked up on running backs and wide receivers and then picked up a quarterback in a later round.

Without further ado, my quarterback is.....Matt Schaub of the Houston Texans. Wait....you've never heard of him? You have no idea who he is? Well, let me tell you why he's going to be amazing this year. He has the best wide receiver in the league (Andre Johnson), he has a young, dynamic running back (Steve Slaton), and his team has a bad defense meaning he will be throwing the ball a lot to keep his team in games. All that adds up to a steal. Now one question mark about him was that he got injured last year. But I believe that was a fluke. I see him breaking out this year and leading my team to 2 fantasy football championships.

Back to the Gym...

...and really sore. Thankfully my recovery from labor and delivery was really great and I was able to get up and move around with ease just days after Grace was born. We went on walks right away and I generally felt pretty good. Well just over a week ago I had my 6 week postpartum check up and decided to wait until I got the go ahead from my midwife to start working out again to go back to the gym. I know I probably could have gone sooner but really why rush into that again. So, she said go for it and I started again on Tuesday. I really enjoy going to a strength training class but it is hard work. We just do reps and lifting for 1 hour straight. I was dreading and fearing the sit-ups but they haven't been so bad. I've also tried to use light weights so the next day I can still pick Grace up. It's been great though. Matt watches Grace while I'm at the gym and I feel great getting in a workout. I've been walking on the off days and that's nice too. So hopefully we can keep that routine up until the fall and then maybe I will be ok with leaving Grace in the childcare room at the gym. I'll keep you posted.

NBA Finals Preview

The NBA Finals begin tonight on ABC and I would like to convince you to tune in.  There are lots of things to do in life, but the NBA Finals should be a priority for you.  Here are five reasons to watch the Lakers battle the Magic for the NBA championship:

1) To root against Kobe Bryant.  People either love or hate the Lakers' superstar.  I don't love him.  So join me in rooting for his demise.

2) Dwight Howard.  He's the superstar of the Orlando Magic and he's got the biggest smile (and muscles) in the game.  He's the anti-Kobe -- a superstar with character. 

3) Rashard Lewis' shooting.  Lewis plays forward for the Magic and has been shooting ridiculously well from 3-point land in the playoffs.  Hopefully he makes 100 3-pointers against the Lakers.

4) Phil Jackson's quest for 10.  Lakers' coach Phil Jackson has won 9 NBA championships.  He's trying to complete the set of 10 with the Lakers this year.  

5) The return of Jameer Nelson.  The Magic point guard got hurt mid-year and was declared out for the season.  But apparently Nelson is almost healed and will try to play during the series.  He was a key in the Magic beating the Lakers twice during the regular season.

All in all, I expect a closely-contested series.  The Lakers have more maturity and depth, but the Magic have momentum from their big series wins against the Celtics and Cavs.  I'm rooting hard for the Magic, but my prediction is Lakers in 7.  I hope I'm wrong.

Dance-off Between.....Baseball Players?

Yes, this actually happened.

Baseball Is Back

After a 5-month break, baseball returns to action with an opening game tonight and Opening Day tomorrow.  I pride myself in making bad predictions, so here is my attempt at breaking down the NL Central this year:

Cubs.  I see the Cubbies staying on top of the division, even after their postseason failures.  They've got too much offense, too much good pitching, and enough veterans to be able to handle the ups and downs of the season.  They do have the potential to collapse if their pitchers (read: Zambrano, Harden) get injured or their new OF Milton Bradley becomes the clubhouse cancer in Chicago he has been elsewhere.  But I don't see it and I have the Cubs down for 95 wins this year.

Cardinals.  Last year, the Cardinals surprised a lot of people by being over .500 and competing for the wild-card.  I think they're going to surprise people this year, with having Chris Carpenter back and having a closer who can get the done (I believe Jason Motte will do well).  They still have some holes in their lineup, but Mr. Pujols is good enough to carry their offense.  Expect the Cards to be in the wild-card hunt the whole year.  If they stay healthy and the Cubs don't, I could see the Cards winning the division.

Brewers.  Oh, my dear Brewers.  Last year was so amazing.  I'd love to believe they will follow up their postseason appearance with a repeat performance, but I don't see it.  Yvonni Gallardo should have a breakout season if he stays healthy and Ryan Braun should be able to compete for the MVP.  But they've got too many holes in the pitching staff, especially the bullpen.  They've got a great offense, and that will help them win a lot of games, but not enough to get in the postseason.  My forecast has them finishing a few games over .500.

Reds.  Everybody loves the Reds this year and lots of people are picking them as a sleeper team in the NL.  I don't see it.  Their manager (Dusty Baker) has only had success with veteran teams and they have the same nucleus as last year and they were way below .500.  I'd be surprised if the Reds win 80 games.

Astros.  The Astros are getting old, they have one great pitcher (Roy Oswalt), two great bats (Carlos Lee, Lance Berkman), and that's about it.  Pencil the Astros down for 70 wins and thank me later.

Pirates.  They haven't been good for a long time.  I don't think they'll start being good this year.  Be happy with 70 wins, Pittsburgh fans.

March Madness

The craziness of the college basketball march madness has begun.  Of the 10 brackets I did, I've already lost my chance at a perfect bracket on all of them.  Oh well.

NFL Championship Game Predictions

I don't know why I do this.  Last week I was 1-3 in my NFL postseason predictions, making me 2-6 for the postseason.   Maybe I'll turn it around this week.  Because I don't care about the teams remaining, I have done no analysis and don't care who wins.  Here are my picks:

NFC Championship game: Cardinals 27, Eagles 24.

AFC Championship game: Steelers 20, Ravens 10.

Go Packers.

NFL Divisional Playoffs Predictions

Last weekend was a great weekend of NFL playoff football with 4 entertaining games.  However, my predictions were bad (I only got 1 right out of 4 games).  I'm studied harder this week and I feel confident in these predictions:

Titans vs. Ravens:  The Titans had the best record in the league while the Ravens defense looked great last week.  Can the Ravens' rookie QB, Joe Flacco, win on the road against the Titans?  I think he can.  Ravens 17, Titans 13.

Panthers vs. Cardinals:  I still can't believe the Cardinals won last weekend.  The Panthers are the best home team in football and have a great rushing game.  They won't have any trouble against the Cardinals.  Panthers 34, Cardinals 17.

Giants vs. Eagles:  The Giants are the defending champions and begin their quest to repeat against their division rival.  The Eagles are one of the hottest teams in the league, but they didn't look exceptional in beating the Vikings last week.  I say Giants in a close one.  Giants 20, Eagles 17.

Steelers vs. Chargers:  This is the toughest game for me to predict.  My head tells me to go with the Steelers, who have the league's best defense, are at home, and have a playoff-tested team.  My heart is drawn to the Chargers, who looked like a very solid team in their victory over the Colts and seem to have some magic after being 4-8 over a month ago and since then, winning 5 straight.  However,  I can't ignore the Steelers defense.  Steelers 24, Chargers 13.

Wild-card Weekend Predictions

Well, the NFL playoffs are upon us.  It's been a tough year for me being a Packers fan, but I will certainly enjoy being an objective observer of the NFL playoffs.  For those of you who don't follow football, I pity you.  You are missing out.

Also, for those of you who only like college football, the NFL actually has a playoff system to determine its champion.  That means the top teams in the league play each other in a single-elimination tournament until 1 team remains.  It is an amazing concept and I hope it catches on some day in college football.

Anyway, on to this weekend's games and my predictions(*):

Cardinals vs. Falcons:  The Falcons have the better record, but the Cardinals are at home.  The Cardinals have a really bad defense and a really good passing offense.  The Falcons can run the ball and have a rookie QB (Matt Ryan).  I'm going with the team that can run the ball.  Falcons 31, Cardinals 24.

Chargers vs. Colts:  Two of the league's hottest teams meet in this match-up.  The Colts have won 9 straight games, while the Chargers won their last 4 games of the year to get into the playoffs.  The Colts are solid on both sides of the ball, while the Chargers are weak on defense and explosive (yet inconsistent) on offense.  I'm going with Peyton Manning's acting ability and the Colts.  Colts 27, Chargers 20.

Dolphins vs. Ravens:  The Dolphins are one of the surprise teams this year, making it to the playoffs after going 1-15 this year.  Despite a solid defense and a good running attack, I don't see them defeating the Ravens who boasts the league's 2nd-best defense and a great rushing attack.  Also, Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis scares me.  Ravens 24, Dolphins 10.

Vikings vs. Eagles:  Could I possibly predict all 4 away teams to win on wild-card weekend?  That would be....well, wild.  The Vikings have been an enigma all year, while the Eagles realized they were a good team the last month of the season.  This game will come down to who will be able to run the ball (both defenses are solid against the run).  Adrian Peterson is too good to not have a big game.  I'm going with the home Vikings.  Vikings 27, Eagles 24.

Derek Jeter Wins....At Being The Worst

Stats experts have concluded that Derek Jeter is the worst defensive player in baseball. I don't like Derek Jeter, so this made me happy.

My theory is that in about 20 years, Derek Jeter will go down as the most overrated baseball player of all time.

The NBA Is Back

Amidst national turmoil in the economy and a coming presidential election, there are many who are losing sight of an amazing development that is upon us. That's right. The 2008-2009 NBA season begins tonight. Forget about the recession and about politics, and focus on the best basketball league in the world. It's better than basketball in Europe, it's better than college basketball (don't get me started on proving that), and it's definitely better than hockey.

The team I follow, the Milwaukee Bucks, is not looking so good this year. They had a bad year last year and were 1-7 in the preseason this year. Most experts are projecting the Bucks to win around 30 games (and lose 52). You would not find me disagreeing with that. The team doesn't really have an identity, and they haven't shown they can play solid defense. The Bucks do have some scoring pop led by Michael Redd, newly acquired Richard Jefferson, and Charlie Villanueva. However, with a new coach and a lot of new players, I expect the Bucks to struggle a lot.

As an aside, I love apple cider.

Brewers Make The Playoffs

For the first time in 26 years, the city of Milwaukee can celebrate a baseball team making it to the postseason. It was quite a ride and I'm proud to be a fan. Go Brewers!!!

My Big Sports Day

Today is September 28th, 2008 and it is a big day in my sports life. I am an avid Wisconsin sports fan, and today could mark a historic day for the Milwaukee Brewers. If they win against the Cubs and the Mets lose again the Marlins, they clinch a playoff spot; if they lose and the Mets win, the Brewers are out; and if the Mets and Brewers both win or both lose, there will be a one-game playoff tomorrow.

In addition to the baseball games today, the Green Bay Packers will be playing a pivotal game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Here is the schedule for these big games:

12:00 pm -- Packers vs. Buccaneers
12:10 pm -- Mets vs. Marlins
1:05 pm -- Brewers vs. Cubs

To celebrate today's big day in sports, I will be blogging throughout the day with updates regarding my emotional well-being as well as the status of the games.

Live Updates:

8:38 am: Just got dressed and put on my Packers t-shirt (I wore my good Brewers t-shirt on Friday). I also just convinced Anne that we will cook brats for lunch today. Good start to the day.

9:12 am: Leaving for church, seeking eternal perspective to be present throughout my sports day.

11:31 am: Back from church, which was solid. Heard a message on "Jesus As President" and was challenged to put Jesus first and let Him be an agent of transformation in my life. One of the things Jesus needs to change is my idolizing of sports. We'll see how I do with that today.

11:34 am: Going to start grill and cook some Johnsonville brats.

12:02 pm: Packers game kicks off with the Packers starting with the ball.

12:12 pm: Packers touchdown!!!!! Rodgers to Jennings for a 25-yard score. 7-0 Packers lead. Also it looks like the Mets/Marlins game is delayed due to rain. I think that's a good thing. I'd rather see the Brewers get their game underway not knowing what's going on with the Mets. Then they can just focus on winning their game.

12:34 pm: Nothing new in the Packers game. The Packers defense has looked pretty solid. Mets game is still delayed. Brewers game starts in half an hour. Also, brats were great in addition to the Spanish rice.

12:45 pm: Rodgers just threw his first interception of the the year; the ball went right off the chest of the running back, so it wasn't Rodgers fault. Hopefully the Packers D can hold. Also, looks like they're warming up in New York and gonna start the Mets game soon.

12:51 pm: Buccaneers score a TD to tie up the game, 7-7. Mets game still hasn't started.

1:00 pm: Mets game has finally started. GO MARLINS!!!! Meanwhile, the Packers aren't playing too well, but the game is still tied.

1:08 pm: Packers are losing now, 10-7; Mets and Brewers games just started, no scoring yet.

1:23 pm: Mets and Brewers games are scoreless. The Packers are now down 13-7, just before halftime. Rodgers threw a 2nd interception on a real bad throw.

1:37 pm: Brewers are down 1-0, thanks in part to an error. Also, the Brewers like to strike out today.

1:50 pm: Mets game is still scoreless, Brewers still down 1-0. Packers aren't starting well after halftime, giving up a big kickoff return and now the Bucs are inside their 20. So far, my big sports day is not proceeding as I would desire. There's lots of time left, though.

2:10 pm: Bucs just got a defensive TD to go up 20-7 on the Packers. The Pack has not looked good since their opening drive. Brewers offense is lifeless right now; they're down 1-0 after 4 innings. Mets and Marlins are scoreless in the 5th inning. One interesting note: Anne is getting noticeably frustrated with the Packers; I'm proud to see her into the game.

2:20 pm: Positive stuff happening. Rodgers threw a great pass to to Jennings for a TD strike to bring the Pack within 6; score is now 20-14. Marlins scored a run to take a 1-0 lead over the Mets. The Brewers still haven't scored.

2:35 pm: The Packers got an interception return for a TD to go up 21-20. Brewers still haven't score. Marlins are now up 2-0. Both games in the bottom of the 6th inning.

2:42 pm: Bad news. The Mets just hit a 2-run homer to tie the game. And Aaron Rodgers is hurt for the Packers. And the Brewers don't have a hit since their first batter of the game.

2:52 pm: It's starting to get intense here in our home. Packers defense is on the ropes with the Bucs driving to go ahead. And the Brewers finally got another hit in the 7th with a lead-off double. I need more apple cider.

3:00 pm: Dangit! Packers went behind 23-21 on a Bucs field goal, then Rodgers threw another interception when he was blindsided by a Bucs defensive player. Looks like the Packers are headed for a loss.

3:05 pm: Brewers tie it!!! Corey Hart totally choked by striking out with the bases loaded; but then Craig Counsell walked to bring in the tying run. Go Brewers!!!!!!

3:11 pm: Packers lose. Whatever, there's more important things to worry about now. The Mets and Brewers are tied in their games at this point. Unbelievable drama. I may be shaking right now. I'm also convinced the Brewers will keep CC Sabathia in the game no matter how many innings it takes. Even if his arm falls off.

3:16 pm: Wes Helms just hit a home run to put the Marlins up by 1!!!!!!!!! I just peed my pants a little.

3:23 pm: Pandemonium going on in our home!!!! Ryan Braun just hit a go-ahead 2-run home run to go up 3-1. The Marlins added another run to go up 4-2. If both these scores hold up, the Brewers are going to the playoffs. Still a few outs left.

3:33 pm: Brewers win!!!!! CC Sabathia was amazing, pitching a complete game. Marlins still up by 2, but the Mets are threatening in the 8th inning.

3:38 pm: Marlins leading by 2 going to the 9th inning. 3 outs away from the Brewers being in the playoffs. Unbelievable. I've already jumped around my house three separate times; I want to do it one more time. Go Marlins!!!!!
